Title : 28th training course on public procurement begins
Description : The 28th three-week residential training course on public procurement for goods, works and services organized by the Central Procurement Technical Unit (CPTU), IMED of the Ministry of Planning, began at the Engineering Staff College Bangladesh (ESCB) at Bausia in Munshiganj district on February 28, 2010. The training course would conclude on March18, 2010. The 27th course that began on February 14, 2010 concluded on March 4, 2010. A total of 28 officials from different government offices are taking part in the 28thth training course on public procurement, said an official of the ESCB. Such three-week trainings under the Public Procurement Reform Project (PPRP-II) are the part of 108 such courses to be held in next three years. About 3240 officials will be trained under the three-week courses. There are also courses of different duration, said Kazi Jahangir Alam, Director of the CPTU. The Local Government Engineering Department (LGED), Roads and Highways Department (RHD), Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) and Rural Electrification Board (REB) are four target agencies considered under this reform project. Eight officials from LGED, three from RHD, six from REB, four from BWDB, two from PWD, two from PDB, one from DESCO, one from Higher Education Quality Enhancement Project and one from Education Engineering Department are attending the 28th course. The CPTU is implementing four major tasks under the PPRP-II with a view to making public procurement system in Bangladesh accountable, transparent and well-functioning. The components are; 1. Furthering policy reform and institutionalizing capacity development 2. Strengthening Procurement management at the sectoral level 3. Introducing e-Government Procurement (e-GP) 4. Communication, behavioral change, and social accountability. The objective of the project is to improve performance of the public procurement system progressively in Bangladesh, focusing largely on the key sectoral ministries and targeting their implementing agencies.
